When the FOX TV network show "Ally McBeal" debuted in 1997 it was an instant critical hit. But the show really took off the following year after they added Lucy Liu to the mix and she generated instant "heat" in the role of bitch attorney Ling Woo who faced down her opponents with a sneer and a feline growl.
After her debut on "McBeal" Lucy was chosen by Entertainment Weekly in as one of the "sexiest women on television." Sadly, Lucy quickly outgrew the 'small screen' and has now left the show to become a huge star in movies like "Payback" with Mel Gibson and "Charlie's Angels" with Drew Berrymore and Cameron Diaz.
2002 saw Lucy back on the big screen as a rogue spy opposite Antonio Banderas in 'Ecks Vs Sever' and she has signed to play Charlie Chan's daughter in a new movie. Of course, Lucy returned for 'Charlie's Angels 2' doing her own stunts as she did in the first 'Angels' and Lucy polished her "tough-gal" rep in Quentin Tarantino's 'Kill Bill' in 2003!
Lucy Alexis Liu was born and raised in Queens, New York City, New York and graduated from Stuyvesant High School in 1986. Stuyvesant is a specialized public high school; you take a SAT-like test to get in - the same test used for br /onx Science and Brooklyn Technical high schools, but Stuyvesant requires a higher score! Lucy is fluent in Mandarin Chinese and practices martial arts, including Kali-Eskrima-silat. She counts knife and stick fighting as 'hobbies'! Plus she's a die-hard adventurer and rock-climbing, skiing, horseback riding and martial arts are all part of her repertoire.
Lucy graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in Asian languages and cultures while also studying acting, dance and voice. In addition to acting, Lucy is a gifted artist. Her work first appeared at the Cast Iron Gallery in SoHo in 1993. She then received an art grant to study in China. Her exhibit of mixed-media photography - pictures laid in the center of an original frame and intermixed with ceramics, paints, wood collages and papers -- chronicled her experiences there and debuted at a Venice, CA gallery in 1997.
She also plays the accordion and, unlike her character Ling the shark, Lucy is described by fellow "McBeal" cast member Greg Germann as "warm and self-effacing." But like her character, Liu also delivers the unexpected: she's
a serious accordion player who liked to jam on the set with Germann. Other television credits include "ER" (in the heartfelt story of a young mother whose baby son dies of AIDS), " High Incident," "NYPD Blue," "L.A. Law," THE X-FILES and "Pearl," on which she was a series regular.
Lucy stands just 5'1" and weighs a slight 103 lbs. but she fills the screen in every scene, whether on TV or now in the movies!

Our Favorite Lucy Quote? That's easy, it's Lucy on college: "I went to NYU for a year and I was so unhappy. Everything was dark and sarcastic. I was living the whole alternalife, going to Julian's Pool Hall on Fourteenth Street, hanging out. So I
went to University of Michigan. The first day I got there I put these beautiful pictures of naked woman on the wall and my roommates comes in and I say, "I know this maybe looks like I'm a lesbian or sompin', but I'm not."

Lucy Liu's Bizarre Sex Tale from TVGuide Online September 14, 1999
Lucy Liu claims she once had sex with a mysterious spirit that continues to follow her everywhere she goes.
"I was sleeping on my futon on the floor, and some sort of spirit came down from God knows where and made love to me," the sultry star told 'Us' magazine in an interview. "It was sheer bliss. I felt everything. I climaxed. And then
he floated away. It was almost like what might have happened to Mary. That's how it felt. Something came down and touched me, and now it watches over me."
Liu also tells the magazine that she is "fascinated" by flesh and once spent time eyeing naked women in a San Jose (CA) spa. "I'm sitting there gawking at these ladies, because they're all different sizes and ages, ranging from 30 to 80 or whatever, and I find myself looking at them like some freak. And men too. How does that thing stand like that? Why is that hanging like that? It's so weird. I just don't understand."
Liu's fascination with flesh includes her hopes to one day photograph her own private parts. "I would love to experiment with that. I would love to have my legs spread open. I would love to see what it is."
Despite her openness, the single Liu insists that she's not interested in casual sex with her suitors. "I usually wait three or four months, because I think if somebody doesn't get to know you in a more intimate way than intercourse, forget about it, because they're never going to get to know you."
